Water Leak Repair
A slow leak left alone for months does more damage than a sudden one caught right away, so don't wait for a stain to spread before making the call.
When this becomes an emergency
- a water stain slowly spreading across a ceiling or wall
- a musty smell in one area that wasn't there before
- a cabinet floor warping or feeling damp under a sink
- the water meter creeping even with everything in the house shut off
What a pro does
Tracking down a water leak usually starts with the water meter, since watching it move with every fixture off confirms water's escaping somewhere in the system rather than just condensation or an old stain. From there, a plumber narrows the search room by room, checking supply lines under sinks, connections behind a washing machine, and fittings anywhere pipe is exposed. A leak inside a wall or ceiling takes more work, sometimes involving moisture meters or a thermal camera to spot a cooler, damp patch of drywall before cutting into anything. Older homes with original galvanized supply lines tend to develop pinhole leaks at joints and elbows as the pipe corrodes from the inside over decades, and it's rarely obvious from outside the pipe until it fails. Once the source is confirmed, the repair itself is often smaller than the search that found it.
